Favorite Christmas Traditions

I always like to document our favorite Christmas traditions. It's fun to go back through the years and see my kids doing the same thing each year, but growing so much bigger every time. One of our favorite traditions is unwrapping a Christmas book every night before bed in the month of December. We start on December 1st and go through Christmas Day. The kids love seeing which book they get to unwrap. I got a lot of these at the D.I. and other thrift stores, but I have bought some classics like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Christmas Story, and others. We add books and take away books each year only leaving our favorites so it's a different line up of books every time. I love this tradition so much!
This isn't a tradition, but it very well could become one. I found Ryder one night curled up under the Christmas tree in a fort he had built. It was so sweet.
Going to see the lights at temple square and visiting the Children's museum is another top favorite of ours. This cute little museum keeps the kids busy for hours and I love that it is free.
After playing for 2 hours they still didn't want to leave. But the excitement of the lights got them out.
I was so happy to have Eddie with us this year. My heart was bursting with joy and happiness every time we did another one of our Christmas traditions. I am so thankful to have him home. We always park at The Gateway and watch the water fountains, then ride the trax to temple square. And on the way back to the car, we always stop in at the huge Barnes & Noble and let the kids play with the train table and roam the kid section. Maddy and I may or may not have begged Eddie to buy us a coveted book... hee, hee
We love watching Christmas movies snuggled up on the couch together. Our favorite Christmas movies are: Home Alone, A Christmas Story, Elf, It's a Wonderful Life, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Muppet's Christmas Carol, The Santa Clause, Scrooge, and Christmas Vacation. We managed to watch all of them this year!!
We always get to open 2 presents on Christmas Eve. One is always Christmas pajamas, and the other is from the family drawing we do. This year the kids got robes with their pajamas. They had been begging all year for a warm robe. They haven't taken them off since Christmas Eve! Libby even asked if she could wear hers to church. ha, ha I love seeing the excitement and compassion each of the kids has for the person they drew out of a hat. They have to spend their own money and I love watching them scrimp and save to get just the right present. We spent an hour at the dollar store going back and forth between many things so Libby could buy Ryder the perfect present. And she did. Maddy had more money than the other kids and it was a delight to watch her put aside all her wants and get her dad something that she knew he would love. Christmas is a wonderful and joyous time, but our Christmas traditions make it even more so.

i love reading about other people's traditions - such good ideas. i'm a little bummed we didn't make it to temple square this year. i also like that you have the kids use their own money to buy presents, teaching them about sacrificing to give to others. such a great idea. i'd be interested to learn more about how they earn their money, especially the little ones. thanks for sharing, sadie!
